As teens approach their teen years, they begin to experience many emotional and physical changes – changes that are not always easy.1 During this challenging and confusing time, even good teens may experiment with alcohol or drugs.

For most teens, it’s not just one thing that influences them to use, but a combination of factors.2

Stress

When teens worry about things like grades, fitting in, and physical appearance, they may use alcohol or drugs as a way to escape their problems.3 Encourage your teen to get involved in sports or other extracurricular activities as a healthier way to cope.4

More Freedom

As teens begin spending more time with their peers and less time with their parents, this increased freedom can lead to using.5 While it’s important to give your teen space, keep track of where they are and who they’re with. If they are at a friend’s house, make sure a responsible adult is nearby or accessible.

Curiosity

Taking chances and trying new things is a normal part of growing up. For some teens, this exploration includes experimenting with alcohol or drugs.6 Remind your teen about the real risks of underage using, and make sure he or she knows how you feel about underage using.

Peer Pressure

Most teens feel pressure to be popular and fit in. Many try alcohol or drugs when they are in a social setting where “everyone else is doing it.”7 Help boost your teen’s confidence by helping them learn different ways to say “no”, and reminding them that real friends wouldn’t pressure them to use.

Transitions

Life events, like going from middle school to high school, breaking up with a significant other, moving, or divorce, can cause a teen to turn to alcohol or drugs.8 Reassure your teen that things will get easier, and make sure he or she knows that using isn’t a solution.

Environment

If teens grow up in an environment where adults use excessively, they are more likely to use themselves.9 If you choose to use, set a good example by using in moderation, and make sure your teen knows that underage using is not acceptable.

Genetics

Teens who come from a family with a history of alcoholism and drug addiction are at an increased risk for alcohol or drug dependence. If alcoholism and drug addiction runs in your family, have an honest discussion with your teen, and make sure he or she understands the seriousness of the disease.10

Personality

Teens who are disruptive, hyperactive, or depressed are at a higher risk for alcohol and drug problems.11 If you feel that your teen’s social issues could lead him or her to abuse alcohol or drugs, consider having your teen see a drug and alcohol counselor.

An Intervention is an attempt to compel a subject to “get help” for an addiction or other problem.

An intervention can be as simple as a conversation. The purpose? To approach your child directly about his drug or alcohol use.

An intervention can be successful, even if it only tackles small goals at first. Just making it clear to your teen that you no longer want him drinking or using drugs is an accomplishment. Addressing your child about his alcohol or drug use may be uncomfortable for both of you, and you may even think it’s unnecessary. But casual or experimental use can quickly turn into abuse, dependence or addiction and can lead to accidents, legal trouble and serious health issues.

That’s why it’s imperative that you intervene as soon as your instinct tells you that something is wrong.

Even if you believe your teen is just “experimenting” it’s important to take action right away.

Casual drug use can quickly turn into drug abuse, dependence or addiction and can lead to accidents, legal trouble and serious health issues.

If you are at all concerned about your child, or even just have a bad feeling, you can and should intervene by:

•Setting tighter limits with clear consequences

•Getting outside help and support if necessary

•Having productive conversations with your child try to remain calm, share your concerns and listen.

•Closely monitoring your child’s behavior and activities

What to Say When Your Teen Reacts Defensively About His or Her Alcohol or Drug Use:
Your teen may not be happy that you’re approaching him about his drug or alcohol use. That’s to be expected. What you might not expect is to be called a snoop, a hypocrite or clueless. Think about how you will handle these accusations if they come up. It’s good to be prepared. Here are some suggested responses:

1. If Your Child Says: “You went through my stuff?! You’re a snoop!”

Try To: Defend your choice to look through your teen’s things by expressing your concern for his health and safety.

You Can Say: “I’m sorry you feel that I broke your trust. But as a parent, my job is to keep you safe and healthy, so I have to be nosey when I believe you’re doing something unsafe.”

2. If Your Child Says: “You smoke/drink! You’re such a hypocrite!”

Try To: Focus on the issue at hand — you don’t want YOUR CHILD using drugs or drinking

You Can Say: “I wish I had never started smoking because it’s so hard to stop.”

“It is illegal for people under 21 to drink because their brains are still developing and aren’t equipped yet to handle alcohol.”

If You Are In Recovery, You Can Say, “I love you too much to let you make the same mistakes that I did.”

3. If Your Child Says:“I’ve never done drugs! You’re wrong!”

Try To: Remain calm and do whatever you can to keep the conversation going.

You Can Say: “I love you way too much to let anything happen to you. I need you to tell me the truth so I can figure out how to help you. I have no intention of getting mad or punishing you.”
